Two separate landslides left four people dead and 11 others injured in Chittagong in the early hours of Saturday.

The deceased are Shahinur Akter, 30, her sister Mahinur Aker, 20, Liton, 23, and his brother Emon, 14.

Akbar Shah police station OC Wali Uddin Akbar said the first landslide occurred at around 1am in Jheel area No 1, killing Shahinur and Mahinur and injuring their parents.

The second one took place in the Lake City area around two hours later, leaving Liton and Emon dead and three others injured, the OC added.

Chittagong Fire Service Assistant Director Faruk Hossain Sikder said that, after receiving the news, a Fire Service team rushed to the spot and rescued five people by bringing them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Shahinur and Mahinur were pronounced dead at the hospital's emergency department.

Meanwhile, the bodies of brothers– Liton and Emon–were found dead at another place.

Plaban Kumar Biswas, a staff officer of District Administration, said the administration has opened 19 shelters to prevent accidents due to landslides.

“The District Administration is miking in areas to move towards safer places from risky zones. In the affected areas, we have volunteers. We're attempting to relocate people who live near the foot of the mountain and are in danger,” he added.

Plaban also mentioned that the District Administration has given Tk25,000 to the deceased's families and Tk15,000 to the injured's families.

He further said: “An eviction drive will begin on Sunday in the presence of law enforcement authorities in all areas of Chittagong that have refused to shift away from the foothills despite being given instructions. In addition, gas and electricity will be cut off in these areas.”
