Power supply to the national grid has been cut off since the fire broke out

Update : 29 May 2022, 06:32 PM

A sudden fire that broke out at a 330MW combined cycle power plant in Shahjibazar area of Habiganj, has been brought under control after two hours.

Panic spread in the area when the fire broke out at 9:30am on Sunday, leaving two transformers burnt.

Five firefighting units from Habiganj, Madhabpur and Shayestaganj brought the fire under control around 11:30am..

Mizanur Rahman, chief engineer of the centre, primarily suspected that the fire could be caused by a short circuit.

According to sources, the fire suddenly came in contact with a transformer while burning grass and garbage nearby.

Within moments, the fire spread to another transformer, the STG hall and the control room.

The centre has two 110MW gas turbines and a 110MW steam turbine. The amount of damage caused by the fire could not be determined yet.

Mizanur Rahman said that the 330MW power supply to the national grid has been cut off since the fire broke out.

He could not confirm when the repair work of the damaged transformer would be completed. “However, the power supply from the old 90MW power plant continues.”

A source said that Bangladesh Power Development Board member Ashraful Islam has left for Shahjibazar from Dhaka to visit the spot.

Engineer Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, the manager of the 100MW power plant, has been assigned to investigate the incident.

On March 1, 2017, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the 330MW power plant.
