Nearly 28.9% of households do not get three meals a day in Barisal, according to a survey conducted by the non-governmental organization Coastal Development Partnership.
The survey was conducted in slums and villages under Barisal Sadar upazila and parts of areas under Barisal City Corporation.
The report was released at a press conference at the ICDA auditorium in Sylhet on Thursday.
It said that 71.9% of the areas where the survey was conducted were under threat of river erosion.
A total of 59% of those covered by the survey were outside social security coverage, while 57.8% are deprived of assistance during disasters and 40% are deprived of essential health services.
Altogether 1,269 households were brought under the survey in March this year.
The villages that were covered in the survey are Nayani and Satani, while the slums brought under the survey are Hiran Nagar slum and Adi Shashan slum.
Participants had to fill out a questionnaire containing 21 questions.
According to the survey, 16.1% of people in the Barisal slums and villages are illiterate and 92% do not have access to potable water.
ZM Rashed, area coordinator of the organization, presented the report at the event and said most areas covered in the survey were highly prone to climate change risks.
In order to mitigate the risks, an increased coverage of social security programs, education — especially technical education — must be stressed, he said.
Representatives of different development organizations were present at the program.
