The authorities have sealed off a hospital in Singair upazila of Manikganj following the death of a pregnant woman after a C-section by a doctor with no medical licence.
Neither the doctor, Emma Binte Yunus, nor the hospital, City Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, have licence to operate.
The hospital was closed under the supervision of UNO Dipan Debnath on Wednesday, Upazila Family Planning Officer Dr Nuzhat Nowrin Ameen told Dhaka Tribune.
Nuzhat said a five-member panel headed by Singair Upazila Health Complex Medical Officer Dr Farhana Nabi had been formed to probe into the matter.
The committee was asked to submit its findings within three working days.
Committee head Farhana said: “Nazrul Islam Shwapan, the owner of the hospital, was unable to produce any documents pertaining to the hospital during primary investigation.”
Moreover, City Hospital and Diagnostic Centre is not registered with the government.
Besides, neither the person who operated on the woman nor the person who administered anaesthesia has a medical degree.
The deceased woman’s family reportedly reached an understanding with the hospital authorities for Tk2 lakh.
“We agreed to reach an understanding due to pressure from influential people. But the hospital authorities have not paid the full amount,” a family member, requesting anonymity, told the media.
At around 11pm on Saturday, Sabina Akhter, 20, was admitted to the hospital in question with labour pain.
About four hours later, Emma Binte Yusuf operated on her. Sabina gave birth to a baby girl, but her situation became critical as she had lost a lot of blood.
“Sabina died in the operation theatre due to the doctor’s mistake,” Monoara Begum, Sabina’s mother-in-law, claimed.
She alleged that not only had the hospital authorities not allowed the family to see Sabina, they had also tried to attack them.
“At around 11am (Sunday), they brought an ambulance and sent my dead daughter-in-law to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital,” she said.
Manikganj Civil Surgeon Dr Moazzem Hossain Chowdhury assured of taking necessary steps after investigation.
