At least 10 people, including a police officer, have sustained injuries in a clash between Awami League and BNP activists in Rajapur upazila of Jhalakathi.
The clash broke out in the upzila’s Bagri area over a conference of the BNP, on Tuesday.
“We decided to hold the BNP’s upazila unit conference with the administration’s permission,” BNP Rajapur upazila unit General Secretary Nasim Uddin Akan told Bangla Tribune.
“However, activists of Rajapur upazila Awami League and its affiliates carried out a sudden attack on us and vandalized our office,” he added.
He alleged that BNP activists had been attacked in phases and had to be rescued by the police.
Awami League’s Rajapur unit General Secretary Zia Haidar Khan Liton said the BNP had been conspiring to carry out violence on the pretext of the conference.
He added that a ruling party rally, protesting criticisms against Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, had been attacked by the BNP.
According to Rajapur police station Inspector Golam Mostafa, both parties hurled brickbats at each other during the clash.
Sub-Inspector Mamun, who was injured in the clash, is undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex.
Additional forces have been deployed to keep the situation under control.
