A sand-laden bulkhead capsized in the Meghna River while another bulkhead hit three makeshift shops on the riverbank during a nor’wester in Bhola on Saturday morning.
No injuries had been reported, said Shahjalal Badsha, officer-in-charge of Elish river police station.
According to locals, the bulkhead vessel named MV Tanim Shamim sank near Tulatali terminal after a nor’wester hit the area at around 7:30am.
Six labourers of the vessel were rescued by locals.
Another bulkhead vessel named MV Hridoy anchored near the Mach Ghat area had hit a tea stall and two fish shops, leaving them completely damaged, said OC Shahjalal.
MV Tanim Shamim sailor Md Monir said the storm had hit their bulkhead when they were going for emergency work to stop erosion of the Meghna river. “Later we jumped into the river and locals rescued us,” he added.
In addition, several houses and shops were damaged in seven upazilas of Bhola in the nor’wester.
