Comilla City Corporation mayor candidate Nizam Uddin Kaisar has resigned from his post as president of Jatiyatabadi Shwecchashebak Dal, the volunteer wing of the BNP.
“Since the party has announced that it will not partake in the polls, with due respect I have resigned,” he said on Thursday.
Kaisar was addressing a media call after the Election Commission finished scrutinizing the nominations for the elections.
He said this time he would ask for votes to build a clean city, which will belong to everyone.
Apart from serving as the president of Shwecchashebak Dal’s Comilla Metropolitan unit, Kaisar was also assistant organizing secretary of the party’s executive committee.
Responding to queries about participating in the mayoral run against party mandate, he said: “I am doing it at the request of grassroot BNP activists, who are victims of attacks, torture and cases.”
He added that contesting the polls while holding a post would reflect badly on the party’s image.
The Comilla City Corporation polls are scheduled for June 15.
Polls to six municipalities and 135 union parishads will also be held on the same day.
The deadline for filing nominations was May 17. Officials verified the nominations on May 19. Candidates have until May 26 to pull out of the race.
Polls symbols will be allotted to candidates on May 27.
Voting in Comilla city will be held with electronic voting machines (EVMs).
