Two activists detained

Update : 17 May 2022, 08:11 PM

A procession of the Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir activists reportedly attacked some police personnel in Sylhet on Tuesday.

Two policemen, including the Kotwali police station OC, were injured in the attack.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner KM Abu Taher confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

According to witnesses, Jamaat-Shibir activists took out a procession in protest of a list of 116 people a joint commission had marked as those making a business out of religion.

When the procession reached the Jailroad Chamber Building point, police stopped it.

The activists reportedly hurled brickbats and came at the police with sticks.

Police later detained two people from the scene.

The two injured police officers, Kotwali police station OC Mohammad Ali Mahmud and Bandarbazar police outpost Sub-Inspector Mishu, are undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

The Public Commission to Investigate Fundamentalism and Communal Violence on May 11 submitted a list of 116 people which included the names of prominent Islamic scholars.

The report alleged that these religious leaders and Islamic orators were engaged in money laundering and militant financing alongside spreading communal hatred.

The list was met with much criticism from some quarters, with Hefazat-e-Islam terming it baseless.
