A mass grave has been found on the banks of the Kopotakkho River at Maheshpur in Jhenaidah.
Locals said the recent rains unearthed the 50-year-old mass grave on Sunday as a local excavation operation had already brought the human remains close to the surface level.
They claimed the skulls and bones were from a mass grave dug by the Pakistani forces during the Liberation War.
Local resident Kabir Hossain said: “Some young men went to bathe in the river and discovered the bones and skulls.
“During the Liberation War, there was a camp of Pakistani forces in Maheshpur, they used to capture and kill people from different places and bury them in mass graves. This must have been one of the mass graves,” he added, referring to his elders.
Maheshpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nayan Kumar Rajbangshi said: “The locals believe that it must have been a mass grave during the Liberation War. We will make arrangements to conserve the skulls and bones soon.”
