A man was killed and 30 others were injured in a clash over establishing supremacy at Jadunandi union of Saltha under Faridpur district on Thursday.

Md Suminur Rahman, senior assistant superintendent (Nagarkanda-Saltha Circle) of Faridpur police, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

The deceased was Serajul Islam, 27.

Local people said that supporters of local chairman Rafik, armed with locally-made weapons, attacked supporters of local Awami League leader Alamgir Mia on Thursday morning over previous enmity.

Alamgir’s supporter Sirajul was injured in the attack and died on the spot, local people said. In response, Alamgir’s supporters vandalized and looted several houses in the area, locals claimed.

Police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

Of the injured, 17 have been admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital in Faridpur. The rest were admitted to Muksudpur Upazila Health Center in Boalmari and adjoining Gopalganj.

Earlier on April 21, the two groups had locked in a clash and a number of policemen were injured while trying to intervene. Rafik and Alamgir were arrested and sent to jail by a court.

On April 28, the court granted bail to the duo. Since then the situation in the area deteriorated, police said.
