Hundreds of readymade garment (RMG) workers on Sunday blocked the busy Nobi Nogor-Chonda road in Savar, demanding the release of their festival allowances ahead of the Eid.
Workers of “Skyline Group” protested and vandalized around six vehicles near the Palashbari area on the road, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Miron Ahmed of the Savar Industrial Police.
Police managed to remove the workers from the road after some time, he added.
One of the protesting workers said the factory employs around 1,400 workers. “Management had promised to distribute Eid bonuses soon, but on Saturday they announced that they would only give us half of the bonus, and the factory would be closed from next Saturday.”
He said the employees tried to halt their work but authorities told them they would get only half of their money and six days off if they take that step.
“Hence, we joined work normally on Sunday morning, but the factory authorities still told us the same thing. We are demanding our rightful payment.”
Iqbal Hossain, the factory's administration manager, was contacted several times but could not be reached for comment on the unrest.
