The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Friday detained three men over the shooting of three Jubo League leaders in Patiya upazila of Chittagong.
The arrestees are Union Parishad (UP) member of Patiya Sadar upazila’s ward no 4 Yaar alias Md Babar, 35, and his two accomplices Md Mohiuddin, 29, and Abdul Quader Chowdhury, 21.
According to RAB sources, Babar was detained on Friday at around 11:30pm in a raid in the Gailartek Bazar area of the upazila.
After his arrest, he told RAB that there were more illegal firearms and ammunition in his house in Naikhain village. When RAB members went there to seize the weapons, Babar shouted an alert to his accomplices.
Later, Mohiuddin and Abdul tried to snatch Babar from RAB by hurling sticks and bricks at them. However, both of them were detained from the spot.
A foreign pistol, an LG gun, a three-quarter gun, and 12 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene.
There are two cases against the arrested Babar in Patiya police station. An officer of the elite police was also injured during the altercation.
On Tuesday, three Jubo League leaders were shot and wounded in a clash with the supporters of a local Awami League leader in Patiya upazila of Chittagong.
The injured were identified as Jamir Uddin, 53, ex-joint convener of Patia municipality unit Jubo League, and two former assistant secretaries of Haidgaon union Jubo League – Saiful Islam, 38, and Iqbal, 40.
Locals claim the incident occurred over establishing dominance in the area.
