Police have detained three Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, including Barguna district unit Secretary General Afzalur Rahman Shahin, on charges of holding a secret meeting reportedly about a sabotage plot.
It took place in Khajurtala area of the Gaurichana Union under Sadar Upazila on Saturday.
The other detainees are Barguna municipal unit General Secretary Zahirul Haque and Betagi Upazila unit President Rafiqul Islam.
Police seized several books, meeting papers and four motorcycles from their possessions.
Barguna Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Ahmed said that the newly-constructed houses donated under the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s fund would be inaugurated on Tuesday in Khajurtala area through video conference.
Due to this, officials of the National Security Intelligence Agency (NSI) increased their surveillance activities in the area.
During a drive, they found out that 10-12 people were holding a secret meeting at Jamaat leader Shahin’s house in that area.
On a tip-off, the Special Detective Branch of the district police, district Detective Branch (DB) of police and Barguna Sadar police conducted a joint operation at the house at noon and detained the three leaders.
However, few others managed to flee the spot.
The OC said: “As the area is sensitive to us now, we took the issue of such a meeting seriously. We suspect that the Jamaat leaders met in a secret meeting to plan sabotage. We will take action after checking and sorting the seized books and documents from the meeting.”
