Anwar Hossain, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police of Chittagong Range, has asked local residents to assist the law enforcers in controlling crimes in Burichang-Brahmanpara border areas of Comilla.
On the rising incidents of crime, the DIG on Wednesday said that issues in the border areas would be solved by discussions with locals.
“Only police patrols can’t reduce crimes; we need the people’s participation too,” he said while speaking to reporters at the office of the Comilla Superintendent of Police.
Regarding issues in the border region of Brahmanbaria, DIG Anwar said that the police authorities would discuss the matter with locals at the union levels.
Earlier, he inaugurated a One-Stop Service for police clearance certificates at the SP office.
His comments come a week after the death of a local journalist in the border area of Burichang Upazila.
Mohiuddin Sarkar Naeem, a staff reporter for the Comilla-based newspaper Daily Comillar Dak, was shot allegedly by drug smugglers in the Shankuchail area near the border on April 13, police said. He was declared dead when taken to a hospital.
Naeem used to be the Brahmanpara upazila correspondent of Ananda TV in Comilla.
On April 14, Mohiuddin’s mother told police that a suspected narcotics dealer named Md Raju, 35, was the main culprit in her son’s killing. She also named six others.
On April 17, Raju was killed in a gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion near the border under Comilla Sadar Upazila while he was trying to flee to India.
Before that, police detained four suspects in the case.
Police on alert over CCC polls
Regarding the imminent Comilla City Corporation election, DIG Anwar said that extra forces would be deployed to avert any untoward incident.
“There is nothing to worry about regarding security,” he added.
"Police will stay alert in catching wanted and convicted criminals. Everyone will be working as per the law once the election schedule is announced."
Comilla SP Farooque Ahmed, Crime Investigation Department (CID) SP Khan Mohammad Rizwan, and In-Service Training Center SP Noresh Chakma were present, among others, on the occasion.
