A young man was hacked to death on Wednesday in a clash between two groups in Bakerganj Upazila of Barisal over establishing dominance.

The deceased was identified as Roni Mollah, 31, hailing from Sanapura village under Faridpur Union.

Three other members of the deceased’s family – Tariqul Islam Taukir, 35, Shahidul Islam Sahan, 32, and their mother – were also injured in the incident.

According to locals and police sources, in the early hours of Wednesday, a clash broke out between the supporters of Mamun Member alias “Hatkata Mamun” and Roni Mollah over establishing dominance in the area.

Later, Roni and his two brothers and mother were hacked and injured by the opponents.

Mostafizur Rahman, police camp in-charge of the union, said they rescued the injured and rushed them to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital on a speedboat.

However, the doctors on duty declared Rony dead on arrival.

Among the injured, Shahidul and Tariqul were sent to Dhaka in critical condition.

Bakerganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alauddin Milon said, upon receiving the news, a team of police visited the spot and the hospital.

He added that they were conducting drives to arrest those involved in the incident.

Locals say Roni's men were recently stabbed and injured by Mamun's supporters, which triggered the clash on Wednesday.

According to the relatives of the victim, Mamun Member had Rony killed as he was obstructing the drug trade in the area.
