Sub-Inspector (SI) Mahbub Morshed of Sitakunda police station has been withdrawn by the Chittagong District Police allegedly for looting money and gold jewelry, and assaulting wife and children of an accused during a raid.
Sitakunda Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Ashraful Karim confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Monday.
On Sunday, a woman named Khaleda Akter lodged a written complaint to the additional superintendent of police (ASP) and the district superintendent of police (DSP) of Sitakunda Circle.
According to the complaint, SI Mahbub raided the house on Saturday afternoon to arrest her husband Nurul Islam, who is accused in a land related case, along with two other policemen and a local source.
SI Mahbub wanted the key to the cupboard as he could not find the accused. When she refused to give the key, she was scolded and got kicked twice.
Out of fear, the woman gave him the keys. The officer then opened the cupboard and took Tk1.42 lakh along with eight ounces of gold ornaments, two mobile phone sets, various certificates of the couple’s sons and daughters, birth registration papers and transaction papers of Islami Bank.
He also assaulted the youngest son of the woman.
Sitakunda Circle ASP Mohammad Ashraful Karim said: “He should have returned after failing to find the accused at his home.
"We’ve got evidence of assaulting the woman and her children during a primary investigation. As a result, he has been withdrawn from the police station.''
The police were also investigating the allegation of looting money and gold ornaments from the house, ASP Ashraful added.
SI Mahbub claimed that the accused had fled the house after sensing their presence. “And we chased him too,” he said, refuting the allegations of looting and assaults.
