Rajshahi Santal farmers died after consuming poison, says autopsy report

Compounds used in pesticides found in their bodies, says head of Rajshahi Medical College forensic department

The two Santal farmers in Rajshahi, who allegedly killed themselves for not getting irrigation water, died after consuming poison, according to  autopsy reports.

The final reports of their autopsies were handed over to the police on Saturday, said Dr Kafil Uddin, head of the forensic department at Rajshahi Medical College.

"We sent the samples from the bodies to the lab for viscera examination. Compounds used in pesticides were found in the bodies," he said,

Investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman said that officials have been sent to bring the reports. After receiving the autopsy reports, further action will be taken, the SI added.

Earlier on March 24, Rabi Marandi, 32, a Santal community member of Nimghatu village in Godagari upazila, and his cousin Abhinath, 30, consumed poison in front of Shakhawat Hossain.

They took the decision out of anger "as Shakhawat had not been giving them a serial number for a long time to get irrigation water supplied to their fields in Iswarpur, according to their family.

Abhinath died around 9pm after reaching home on March 24 while Rabi died two days later at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

Later, the agriculture ministry formed a four-member panel to probe the deaths of the two farmers.

The committee was asked to submit its report within a week.

.As per a notification, the committee was formed based on two reports published by two media outlets.
