Rajshahi sweet shop fined over ‘green mango jilapi’

Shop owner was not selling what they committed to sell, say authorities

Update : 15 Apr 2022, 10:57 PM

A sweet shop in Rajshahi that became famous for its green mango jilapis has been fined Tk25,000 over spreading misleading information about the food item.

A joint mobile court conducted by the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Detective Branch, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) and the BSTI visited the shop, “Roshogollah”, on Friday.

DNCRP Rajshahi Division Additional Director of Hassan-Al-Maruf said that the jilapi had very little raw mango in it.

“It is mostly lentils, dalda and bits of green mango among other ingredients. They are heavily dependent on food colour,” he said.

Hassan added that the shop was not giving the consumers what they had committed to sell, which violates consumer rights.

“Since the owner, Arafat Rubel, is a new entrepreneur, he has been fined Tk25,000 as a warning,” he said.

“Roshogolla” started selling the raw mangoes at two of its outlets in Rajshahi town and New Market area on April 7. They were selling the jilapi for Tk250 per kg.

“The mangoes are now small and little in amount which the authorities did not like,” Arafat Rubel said. “They gave us a few directives regarding our marketing strategy. We are respectful of the law and will be careful next time,” he added.

He later posted a status on Facebook, confirming the raid.
