A seventy-five-year-old street beggar has been killed after being hit by a car driven by Principal Sohrab Uddin, a former BNP lawmaker from Kushtia-3 constituency, police say.

Principal Sohrab, however, refuted the allegation, claiming that his driver was at the wheels. “We’ve settled the matter,” he said on Thursday.

The incident took place at Mozafar Petrol Pump in Majampur Gate area around 3pm on Wednesday, but it came to light on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Hazera Khatun, wife of Kubbat Sheikh from Sujanagar of Pabna. She used to beg alms in different areas of Kushtia town.

“No one has filed a complaint over the issue,” said Officer-in-Charge of Kushtia model police station Sabbirul Islam.

“The former MP was driving the car. The woman was injured when he went to the petrol pump for refueling his car. She was later taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where she died around 6pm,” the OC added.

On the other hand, Principal Sohrab said that the woman was lying on the floor in front of his car at that time. “She sustained injuries when my driver started the engine. Later I took her to the hospital,” he added.
