A human chain was formed in the Boishakhi Fuel Pump area of Jhenaidah's Kaliganj on Wednesday morning, demanding the preservation of dozens of 100-year-old Koroi trees while constructing the six-lane highway.

The program was organized by a volunteer organization called "Youth Against Hunger".

People of all walks of life joined the event holding banners and festoons in their hands.

There are over 100 century-old Koroi trees on both sides of Jessore-Khulna Highway between Mobarakganj Sugar Mill and Bhushan Street's Janata Bank Mor, according to Kaliganj unit Joint Convener Fouzur Rahman Sabit.

He said that the Koroi trees were an integral part of Kaliganj's heritage. "Many people at home and abroad know about these trees," he said.

The protesters demanded that the authorities preserve the alive trees during the expansion of the highway, while cutting off the dry and risky trees, and the branches.
