A fifth-grader student being tortured after tying him to a pillar over a theft allegation in Chuadanga Sadar Upazila on Sunday has created outrage.
The victim is Arafat Rahman, 11, son of Monwar Hossain of Dosto village and student of Dosto Government Primary School.
Locals said the incident took place when Arafat went to a shop named “Mayer Doa Fashion House” near his school to buy lunch.
As theft was quite rampant in the area, the shop owner, Ali Ahmed, tied up the boy to a pillar on suspicion of stealing money. He also beat him up severely.
However, Ali Ahmed denied the allegation, and claimed that the boy was tied up for a while for stealing, but he was not beaten.
Earlier, a student of the same school stole money from his shop, he claimed.
Abdul Momin, the headmaster of the school, deplored the incident.
“I went to the spot and freed my student after getting the news. No money was found on him,” he added.
Local Union Parishad member Abu Saleh said: "I heard about the incident at night. Even if something was stolen from the shop, torturing a child is a violation of law.”
Officer-in-Charge of Darshana police station AHM Lutfur Kabir said no complaint has been filed in this regard. Legal action will be taken after getting a complaint.
