2 held for smuggling cannabis inside ‘Malta balls’

Police recover cannabis weighing over 4kg from 42 balls

Police detained two people for carrying 4kg cannabis hidden inside Malta-shaped balls in Comilla’s Burichang Upazila on Friday.

The duo are Mohammad Ali, 31, and Shahid Mia, 28, from Brahmanbaria. Another accused named Mohammad Sumon, 29, managed to flee the scene.

Burichang police Sub-Inspector (SI) Sharif Rahman confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

A team of police led by SI Mamun Hossain searched various vehicles on the road in Panchora area of Rajapur on Friday.

“During the search operation in a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw en route to Comilla, the passengers said they were carrying Malta fruits in their bags for a relative,” SI Mamun said.

When the police members wanted to see the fruits, accused Sumon ran away. At that time, they discovered around 4kgs of marijuana from 42 Malta-shaped balls in the bags.

A case was filed under the Narcotics Control Act and the duo were sent to jail through a court in Comilla the same day.
