People are usually glum when they are busted for drugs. Some even start bawling.
But 27-year-old marijuana smoker Kamal Hossain is of a different breed, clearly influenced by a different weed.
Nabbed by police in Dinajpur’s Chirirbandar Upazila with 450 grams of marijuana in his possession on Monday night, Kamal showed none of the aggression that other arrestees display.
Instead, presented before the media with the confiscated contraband the next day, Kamal could not stop grinning.
And his infectious smile soon spread to the policemen and journalists present at Chirirbandar police station.
When asked why he was smiling despite being in a tough situation, Kamal said: “I smoke marijuana … only marijuana.
“There’s no point in lying. I have to smoke marijuana every day. It costs me Tk20 to buy a puria [a small packet, enough to roll a joint] of marijuana, and I often have to spend Tk80 to Tk100 every day. I buy in bulk.”
The psychoactive substance in marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol, causes an increase in the release of dopamine, giving users of the happy weed their high, and causing Kamal to experience his arrest as a pretty dope event.

Meanwhile, a police officer said he had not seen an accused beaming like that after being arrested. “Usually when someone is arrested they cry… This accused (Kamal) is unusual.”
Police made another arrest on drug charges the same night; Lutfar Rahman, 33, was held with 1kg of marijuana in his possession.
Chirirbandar police station OC Bazlur Rashid said two separate narcotics cases have been filed against Kamal and Lutfar.
