Five sued over Narayanganj chemical factory fire

Nine people sustained burn injuries in a fire at Lily Chemical Factory in Rupganj upazila

Five people including the owner of a chemical factory in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj have been sued following the death of four workers in a fire incident at the factory last week.

One Azizar Rahman filed the case with Rupganj police station on Sunday. Police, however, could not manage to arrest anyone over the incident so far.

Last week’s fire at the chemical factory in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj claimed three lives on Saturday, taking the toll to four.

Doctors at Dhaka’s Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery declared 30-years-old Sajib dead at around 6:30pm while Bayezid, 30, died around 7pm on Saturday.

At around 4:20am on Saturday, 23-year-old Mujahid, who had 80% burns, died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Earlier, on Friday, another victim of the fire, 35-year-old Akalu, succumbed to his burn injuries.

Mujahid’s body has been kept at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Inspector Bacchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.

Nine workers sustained burn injuries in the fire at Lily Chemical Factory on March 29.

Others injured in the fire are, Rokon, 25, Khademul, 20, Ripon, 25, Mehedi, 21, and Rasel, 22.

Three firefighting units managed to douse the blaze in around two hours, and the Fire Service suspects it was caused by a short circuit during heavy rain.
