10 hurt as police foil RMG workers’ protest in Narayanganj

Protesters say they have not been paid since January

Update : 14 Oct 2022, 08:16 PM

At least 10 people were injured when police fired rubber bullets on the RMG workers during a procession on Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road in Narayanganj’s Fatullah on Thursday demanding payment of their dues.

MA Shahin, district president of Garment Workers Trade Union, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

More than 300 workers of “Rupashi Garments” took to the streets near the Shibu Market area at around 10am and put up barricades on the road, halting traffic movement on both sides.

According to the agitating workers, they have not been paid since January and have been threatened by the factory management when they recently raised the issue.

Traffic movement resumed in the afternoon after the workers retreated following assurances of getting payment soon, said Fatullah model police station OC Rakibuzzaman.

Inspector Sheikh Bashir Ahmed of Narayanganj Industrial Police 4 said: “The factory owners have promised to pay the workers on April 3.”
