A part of the skull of Mahadi J Akib, a second-year student of Chittagong Medical College (CMC) injured in an attack by Chhatra League activists, has been replaced.
The bone was replaced during surgery lasting six and a half hours, beginning at 9am on Monday.
Neurosurgeon Dr Noman Khaled Chowdhury told reporters that his team had successfully completed the surgery and that Akib was doing fine.
Akib was brought to the CMCH neurosurgery department from his home in Comilla on February 27 for the surgery.
He was fighting for life after getting severely injured in a clash between two factions of the Chhatra League on the campus on October 30, 2021.
Akib’s skull was cracked open after attackers hit him with a glass bottle on the head. Later, his head was smashed with a hockey stick.
Following the attack, Akib was admitted to the CMCH Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Later, a section of Akib's ruptured skull was taken out by surgeons and implanted under his abdomen skin.
