Balish Mishti – a pillow-shaped sweetmeat with the smallest weighing 400gm and sold at Tk100 – is the main attraction of the traditional Katagarh Mela that takes place every year in Boalmari Upazila of Faridpur. People of all ages coming from different areas are astonished as they witness an 8kg Balish Mishti being sold at Tk3,000. Manik Biswas, a sweetmeat shop owner from Madaripur, introduced Balish Mishti at the fair last year. Originally, Goyanath Mishtanno Bhandar of Netrakona made Balish Mishti popular across the country which is widely used as a gift item in festivals and wedding events.
These photos of the folk fair, arranged on the occasion of annual Ursh at the shrine of Dewan Shager Shaher (Rah), were taken by Dhaka Tribune.
