RMG workers torch bus during safe road protest in Gazipur

Authorities assure effective measures to prevent road accidents in Board Bazar area

Garments workers in Gazipur blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway on Tuesday in protest against the injury of a worker in a road accident.

The agitating workers also torched the bus of “Shoukhin Paribahan” that hit Monir Hossain, 27, who works as an electrician of Alif Casual Ltd in Bhogra area, around 2pm.

However, local and long-route passengers suffered indescribably as the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway remained closed for three hours.

According to police, witnesses and workers, Monir was seriously injured when he was hit by the bus while crossing on the highway in front of Columbia factory in Board Bazar area.

Upon receiving the news, the workers took to the streets, vandalized buses and cars in Maleker Bari area, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khasru Mia of Basan police station confirmed.

He said the workers had a discussion with representatives of the Road Transport Owners’ Association and representatives of various branches of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) around 4:30pm.

They promised to make a divider in the market area in consultation with the authorities concerned. They also assured that the injured worker would be given compensation on Wednesday. 

At this, the workers lifted the blockade and traffic on the highway became normal after 5:30pm.
