The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) says it has detained 10 activists, including the chief, of a Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) ideologue new group in Khulna on Saturday.

The arrests were made after a raid in an under-construction house at the city’s Khalishpur, Khulna-based RAB-7 Director Mostaq Ahmed told a media call on Saturday.

He said they were tipped-off about a secret meeting of “Jamaatul Muslimeen”, a new outfit of the banned militant organization JMB ideologue.

The terror suspects have been identified as Anwar Kabir Milan alias Middat Hossain, 50, Sohail Rana, 30, Aminul, 38, Kamrul Islam, 55, Rifat Rahman, 24, Abdur Rauf, 72, Md Sheikh Farid, 26, Abdul Alim, 50, Md Rafiqul Islam, 48 and Talha Islam, 19.

A large quantity of Jihadi literature and books were seized in the raid.

RAB said the group’s self-proclaimed Amir, Middat Hossain, studied in Saudi Arabia from 2002 to 2006. After completing his studies, Middat came back and got acquainted with one Professor Majid from Bhola-Char Fashion area.

Majid was a follower of the then JMB Amir Shaikh Abdur Rahman and Shaikh Saidur Rahman.

Majid was involved in the 2005 series bomb attacks in 63 districts across the Bangladesh, said RAB before adding that he was later freed as charges against him were not proved.

Middat was radicalized by Majid and he had helped him to get acquainted with several JMB activists, according to investigators.

Middat was arrested by Detective Branch police in 2012 for suspected militant activity, but was released later, said senior RAB officer Mostaq.

“Back then, he planned to form a new group and in 2018, he launched his outfit with the people Majid acquainted him with,” he said.

According to preliminary investigations, Middat and his accomplices were running recruiting campaigns in several parts of the country.

“They have been recruiting activists from Tangail, Gazipur, Jessore, Khulna, Mymensingh and Dhaka at full swing and had plans to expand it to Kushtia, Rajshahi, Jamalpur, Kishoreganj and eventually all over the country,” said Lt Col Moshtaq.
