81,000 liters of soybean oil seized in Jamalpur

Two businesses fined for hoarding edible oil

Update : 14 Mar 2022, 04:05 PM

A mobile court has fined two business establishments for hoarding 81,000 liters of soybean oil in Jamalpur.

Melendah Upazila Additional Assistant Commissioner Md Serajul Islam fined Messrs Topu Enterprise Tk20,000 and Janani Tel Bhandar Tk10,000 during a drive in Sunday.

Serajul Islam said that they found 56,000 liters of the cooking oil in 376 drums at Topu Enterprise.

The owner did not have necessary document or receipts, he said.

Meanwhile, Janani Tel Bhandar hoarded 25,500 liters of oil in 166 drums.

The government has tightened monitoring in the market as prices of the cooking oil skyrocketed in the past month.

Sellers are reportedly hoarding soybean oil, creating a fake market crisis and charging more than the retail price from customers.

On March 9, the National Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection (NDCRP) recovered 112 liters of soybean oil from under a seller’s bed in Comilla.
