A female judo player, who won gold at the 2019 South Asian Games, has been assaulted by her landlord and his family members over unpaid dues in Gazipur.

The incident took place around 11:30pm on Tuesday at Shafiqul Islam's house in Jamgarh Mollah Bari area of Ashulia.

Sub-Inspector Tanim Ahmed of Ashulia police station confirmed the matter on Wednesday morning.

The victim Sumaiya Akhter, hailing from Nalitabari Upazila in Sherpur, is a member of the national women's judo team.

Her parents live in a rented house in the Jamgarh area while she resides at the National Judo Federation dorm.

Sumaiya said: “A few days ago, I came to visit my parents in Ashulia. On Tuesday night, I was preparing for my SSC exam. At that time, the landlord came and shouted at my parents for rent.

“Then I got involved in an argument with them. At one point, the landlord's wife slapped me and I slapped her back. Later, she called her husband and son, and swooped on me, leaving me in a bloody state.”

Sumaiya informed Ashulia police about it and went to a hospital for treatment.

Landlord Shafiqul claimed that Sumaiya’s parents had about Tk40,000 as dues. Three months ago, they said they would leave the house.

“However, they neither leave the house, nor do they pay the rent. Last month, they paid only Tk6,000. When I went to give them notice to leave the house, the girl hit my wife,” he said.

SI Tanim said the victim came to the police station at night.

“We have asked her to go to the hospital and then lodge a written complaint about the matter. Legal action will be taken on the basis of the complaint,” he added.
