Police foiled a BNP rally in Chandpur town on Wednesday, triggering clashes that left around 50 people injured.
The clash broke out after the members of Shwecchashebak Dal, BNP’s volunteer wing, blocked JM Sengupta Road with a truck to hold a rally in the afternoon in protest against the rising prices of commodities.
At one point, the opposition activists hurled brickbats at the law enforcers, who in turn, fired tear gas and blank shots to bring the situation under control.
Earlier, they brought out a procession and paraded through the town.

Additional Police Superintendent (Sadar Circle) Asif Mohiuddin said that the BNP activists had blocked the road for their demonstration, which is why the police tried to stop them.
“We have seized the truck that they used to build the temporary stage. Everyone will be brought to book,” he said.
After the clash, ASP Mohiuddin led a drive into the house of BNP’s district unit Convener Ahmed Manik.
They also briefly detained two people for questioning.
