Three children died after being hit by a train at Bijoypur level crossing on the Comilla-Noakhali Highway on Wednesday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Lima, Tasfia and Mim — all students of class five at Bijoypur Primary School.
Debashish Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC) of Comilla Sadar police station, confirmed the matter.
The school is right next to the level crossing, according to locals. There is no bar to stop the people from crossing the rail tracks where the accident took place.
According to local people, the students were on their way to school when the Chittagong-bound Mahanagar Provati hit them.
Following the accident, local people blocked the Noakhali-Comilla Highway causing a temporary tailback.
However, they lifted the blockade on assurance from Upazila Vice Chairman Abdul Hai Bablu that a foot over-bridge will be built in that area.
Later in the day, Comilla Deputy Commissioner Kamrul Hassan visited the families of the victims and announced Tk25,000 assistance for each family.
