A police inspector has been arrested in the capital in a case filed for torturing his wife for dowry.
The arrestee, Mohammad Shamsuddoha, is an inspector at Darshana police station in Chuadanga.
Gulshan police arrested him from Rajabazar area of the capital early Thursday in a case filed by his wife, Farzana Khandaker Tuli, on February 9.
Shamsuddoha was later handed over to Faridpur’s Kotwali police station. On Friday, he was produced before a court. The court sent Shamsuddoha to jail pending an investigation.
MA Jalil, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
The couple got married in 2015. Farzana in the case statement said that she had been subjected to torture on a regular basis for dowry.
Shamsuddoha asked Tk70 lakh from her family and they managed to give him Tk15 lakh. But this did not satisfy the police officer and he kept torturing her. Later, Farzana went to her father’s residence and started to live there with her son.
She said that her husband had warned her not to return without the money.
Farzana also alleged that Shamsuddoha had an extramarital affair.
