Five members of a family including a village headman were hacked to death allegedly by group of agitated villagers in Ruma Upazila of Bandarban.

The incident took place in Abu Para of Gelenga sometime on Thursday, police said on Friday.

The deceased were identified as headman of the village Lockrui Mro, 60, and his sons – Ronthui Mro, 45, Lengrung Mro, 42, Menwai Mro, 37 and Ringrao Mro, 35.

Two others, including another son of the headman, were injured during the attack and managed to flee the scene.

Local people alleged that the headman’s family had secretly been performing black magic on the villagers.

“On Thursday night, a group of agitated villagers went to their house to confront them regarding share in amulet business, but that resulted into a clash,” said Galenga UP Chairman Menrat Mro.

At one point, the villagers killed the headman and four of his sons.

Bandarban Superintendent of Police Jerin Akhter told Dhaka Tribune that the villagers had dumped the bodies in a hill stream. A team of law enforcers were trying to recover the bodies, she added.
