Police in Chittagong have detained a government employee in connection with two 8mm Pistol and 60 rounds of bullets sent to him in mail from Italy.
Double Mooring zone police detained Majumdar Kamrul Hasan from the port city’s Halishahar area on Monday night, Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Deputy Commissioner (West) Abdul Warish Khan confirmed.
Kamrul works as an office assistant in Chittagong Income Tax Department’s Tax Zone-1, said police.
DC Warish Khan said that he has been handed over to Bandar police for further proceedings.
On Sunday, Chittagong customs officials confiscated two Italian made 8mm pistols and 60 rounds of bullets in a shipment of household products mailed from Italy.
The shipment was sent by one Rajib Barua, who Kamrul’s wife Umme Salma claims is a childhood friend of her husband.
“We were expecting chocolates, and toiletries. I have no idea regarding the firearms,” she told Dhaka Tribune on Sunday.
On Monday, Chittagong Customs Assistant Revenue Officer Delwar Hossain filed a case with Bandar police station against the sender and receiver of the parcel.
Both Kamrul and Rajib are residents of Chittagong’s Agrabad Govt CGS Colony. Kamrul had been a resident there for 30 years and involved in a construction business with his brother. He is also the organizing secretary of the colony’s association.
Meanwhile, Rajib moved to Italy as an expatriate in 2009, according to residents of the colony.
They said that he last came to the country on February 4 this year.
