He had been pressuring the victim for dowry ever since his marriage to her a year-and-half ago, says RAB

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a man accused of cutting off his wife’s hand over demands for dowry.

Md Rafiq, 31, was arrested during a drive in Chittagong on Thursday, RAB-11 chief Tanvir Mahmid Pasha confirmed on Friday.

He admitted to the crime during primary questioning and will be handed over to Fatullah police.

On January 15, Rafiq tied his wife up and cut off her hand for not receiving dowry, said RAB.

He then locked her up and fled their home in Narayanganj’ Fatullah, hiding in different places across the country until his arrest.

On January 19, the victim’s brother Rubel, 27, filed a case with Fatullah Police under the Women and Children Repression Prevention act.

According to RAB, Rafiq married the victim a year-and-a-half ago and since then had been pressuring her for Tk200,000 in dowry.

She managed Tk100,000 from her parent’s home, but her husband continued to torture her.

At one point, he sent her off to her parent’s home and brought her back a month ago after being assured of the dowry money.

When he still did not receive the money, he mutilated the victim.
