South Sudan has expressed an interest in leasing its 0.6 million square kilometers of fallow land to Bangladesh in order to collaborate on agricultural production.
Agriculture Minister Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said Bangladesh will send an expert team soon to scout the land.
The agreement was made at the secretariat on Tuesday afternoon during a meeting with South Sudan Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Deng Dau Deng Malek.
The team to scout the land will include agricultural researchers, scientists, and agricultural extension employees.
"We will take precise action based on the expert report ," the minister said, adding that private entrepreneurs had been invited to invest in South Sudan's agricultural sector.
The government will take all necessary steps, including sending labourers, he said.
The deputy minister of South Sudan said they would like to benefit from Bangladesh's agricultural success and experience.
“Besides meeting our own food demands, we aim to export crops cultivated on our large fallow land,” he said.
