The local administration in Rajshahi has decided to close all shops, shopping malls and community centres after evening as a measure to stem the rise in Covid-19 cases.

“The decision will come into force on Saturday,” Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Jalil told Dhaka Tribune, adding that a circular would be issued on the matter.

He said: “The entertainment centres and hat-bazaars will be kept under observation. Supervision at the field level will be increased to prevent unnecessary gatherings or hangouts.”

Earlier, Rajshahi district was marked as a “red zone” on January 19 due to the increased infection rate.

The infection rate in Rajshahi division has been above 60% for the last few days. On Friday, the rate was over 63% while it was 75% on the day before.

The District Covid Control Management committee has taken measures to discourage people from going out of the house unnecessarily and advised everyone to abide by this order in the public interest, the DC added.

The Rajshahi Metropolitan Police has also directed the police stations and outposts concerned to implement the directives in this regard.

A total of 1,121 more people tested positive for Covid-19 in all eight districts of the Rajshahi division on Thursday taking the caseload to 107,720 since the pandemic began in March, 2020.

As many as two patients died from the deadly virus during the same period.

Meanwhile, the recovery count rose to 97,911 in the division after 264 patients were discharged from the hospitals on the same day.
