Police arrested four Union Parishad chairmen in Rangamati on Tuesday, right after they took oath at the deputy commissioner’s office.
The arrestees are Kutukchhari union Chairman Kanon Chakma, Sabekhyong’s Shupan Chakma, Ghila Chhari’s Amal Kanti Chakma and Burighat union Chairman Promod Khisa.
Arrest warrants were issued against them in a murder case filed in 2018, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Tapas Ranjan.
The four won the Union Parishad polls held on December 26, 2021. They are also accused in two cases filed with Langadu police station.
On Tuesday, they were sworn in along with six others by Deputy Commissioner Md Mizanur Rahman. Additional District Magistrate Md Mamun and Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazma Binte Amin were also present among others.
A team of the Detective Branch of police made the arrests around 3:30pm. Later, they were presented before the District and Sessions Judge’s Court.
According to police, the then Nanniarchar upazila parishad chairman, Advocate Shaktiman Chakma, was gunned down in front of his office on May 13, 2018.
