A woman was found dead in the victim support centre inside the Kotwali Police Station in Rangpur on Sunday.

Ruhi Akhter, 19, was found hanging from the ceiling in the centre’s second floor, said OC Abdur Rashid.

According to him, the female sub-inspector and five female constables responsible for the support centre have been withdrawn over negligence of duty.

Police said Ruhi came to Rangpur by herself from Jhenaidaha’s Harinakunda on Saturday.

She was reportedly in a relationship with a man named Akash, hailing from Rangpur’s Baharkhasna, who asked her to come to the northern district.

However, when she got there, she found his phone switched off and started wandering the Shahebganj area.

Locals called 999 when they saw her, and police rescued her and turned her over to the victim support centre.

According to OC Rashid, Ruhi had once before come to Rangpur to meet Akash in March last year and similarly been handed over to the support centre when locals found her wandering.

Her parents later came and took her home at that time, he said.

The deceased’s father has already filed a case against Akash over inciting suicide, the police official said, adding that efforts were underway to arrest the accused.

Meanwhile, Ruhi’s father Sekander Ali told Dhaka Tribune that Akash brought his daughter to Rangpur under false promises and demanded exemplary punishment for the incident.
