Several students of Shahjalal University of Engineering and Technology (Sust) have gone on a fast-unto-death demanding Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed’s removal.
Some 24 agitating students began the fast in front of the VC’s residence at around 3pm on Wednesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, Education Minister Dipu Moni directed the Sust VC to find a solution to the protests as soon as possible after speaking with the demonstrating students.
Sust students have been protesting since January 13, demanding the resignation of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall Provost Zafrin Ahmed.
Zafrin, who had been accused of misbehaving with some students, resigned from her post, citing health issues in the face of protests.
Her removal as provost of the residential hall for female students was one of the principal demands of the students protesting on the campus.
However, students continued their protests after police charged batons and fired rubber bullets at them on Sunday.
