Bodies of three more Narayanganj trawler capsize victims found

So far nine bodies have been recovered

Authorities have recovered two more bodies, including that of a child, that went missing after a trawler capsized in Narayanganj’s Dhaleshwari River six days ago.

Fire Service divers found the bodies two men and a child floating on the river on Monday during search operations, Narayanganj Fire Service Deputy Director Abdullah Al Arefin confirmed.

The bodies have been identified as- Tamim, 7, Md Abdullah, 30 and Shamsuddin, 65. The bodies have been handed over to the family.

So far, nine of the 10 missing bodies have been recovered.

On Sunday, locals reported to the Fire Service after finding six bodies floating in the river near the Boktaboli terminal.

Fire Service officials said they would continue its search efforts until all of the missing persons were found.

Meanwhile, three people, including the launch master and driver have been arrested in connection with the mishap.

A court rejected the police plea to interrogate them in custardy for five days.

On January 5, at least 10 people went missing after the trawler, hit by the launch MV Farhan 6, capsized in the Dhaleshwari River.

On Thursday, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Acting Deputy Director Babu Lal Baidya filed a case against three people at Fatullah model police station over the capsize.

The accused are launch master Kamrul Islam, driver Md Jasimuddin Bhuiyan and “sukani” (steerman) Jasim Mollah.

The Narayanganj district administration also opened an investigation into mid-river collision.

Reckless navigation and an uncontrolled increase in the number of vessels on waterways have led to collisions and have been the leading cause of water accidents in the country since 2005.

According to a 2021 research, collisions accounted for 61.72% of all waterway accidents between 2008 and 2019. These accidents accounted for 53% of fatalities on waterways.
