Police have arrested two people over the rape and murder of an apparel factory worker in Gazipur.

Forty-five-year-old Rashida Begum was strangled to death on the morning of January 2 at Sreepur Upazila’s Bhangnahati.

Suspects Omar Farooq, 20, and Rabbi, 19, were arrested between Thursday and Friday, said Sub-Inspector Amzad Sheikh of the Sreepur police.

“Farooq was held late on Thursday and based on information gleaned from him, Rabbi was nabbed on Friday night,” said the police officer.

Farooq and victim Rashida were coworkers at the local Ishraq Spinning Mills, added Sub-Inspector Sheikh.

After murdering Rashida, Farooq took off her nosepin and necklace and sold it to Sayeed Hossain. The suspect was arrested based on information from Sayeed, said the police officer.

“Farooq confessed to his involvement and his statement was recorded by a magistrate under Section 164,” he added.

On the morning of January 2, Rashida went to collect firewood from a forest near her home at Sreepur’s South Bhangnahati, when Farooq and Rabbi attacked her. They strangled her to death and raped her before dumping the body in the forest.
