UP polls violence: Another dies in Chandpur

He was injured on January 5 when the supporters of two rival groups clashed during the polls

A person who was seriously injured during the election violence in Algi Uttar union of Chandpur's Haimchar upazila, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital on Friday.

Deceased Md Mizan Gazi, 55, son of Shahadat Gazi of the union, breathed his last at around 10am, said Dr Rubel, resident doctor of Chandpur Sadar Hospital.

He was injured on January 5 when the supporters of two rival groups clashed during the polls outside Mahila Dakhil Madrasa Centre in Jamila area of the union.

Meanwhile, two people were killed in separate incidents at Kachua and Haimchar upazila in violence during the UP elections on the same day.

One of the deceased, identified as Sharif Hossain, 18, was stabbed dead during the clash outside Hatirbandh Kendra at Sachar union of Kachua upazila, said  Sudip Roy, additional superintendent of police.

Another deceased identified as Mir Hossain, 42, a cement-rod trader of Shariyatpur’s Palang, was killed at Ishanbala Ward-6 of Nilkamal union in Haimchar upazila, said Mahbubur Rahman Mollah, officer-in-charge (OC) of Haimchar police station.

In the fifth phase, UP elections took place in 29 unions of Chandpur where 162 candidates contested the polls for the post of chairman and 1,412 for the posts of general members and reserved members.
