UP member candidate threatens to take his own life if he loses

If elected, the letter says, the candidate will work for the betterment of the area

A suicide note, circulated among the locals of Mourat Union under Pangsha in Rajbari, under the name of a Union Parishad (UP) ward member candidate has created much hype.

The letter, allegedly written by 30-year-old Ripon Ali, stated that he would take his own life if he did not win the upcoming UP elections, slated for Wednesday.

Ripon, however, claims that he did not circulate the note.

Names of 30 people were mentioned in the letter who would be responsible for the suicide. The letter stated that Ripon has been harassed and censured by his family members and relatives for not announcing his candidature earlier.

It said the candidate would buy a buffalo for his funeral. “But if I win, it will be used in a feast for the people,” read the letter, which added that he must be buried at Dhuliyat Graveyard after his namaz-e-janaza at 12:30pm on January 6.

If elected, the letter said, the candidate would work for the betterment of the area in cooperation with the local people.

Contacted, Ripon Ali claimed he did not know who had spread the note. “When I went to the police station, they said they would take action once they are given the link to the Facebook profile from which a photo of the note was posted.”

Md Akkas Mondol of the locality said that Ripon’s brother Shiblu Khan had given him the letter two days ago.

Shiblu claimed that the rival candidates had circulated the note to demean his brother’s image.

Ripon Ali became an active member of the ruling Awami League upon his return from Malaysia two years ago.

Election Officer Md Abdul Alim and Returning Officer of Mourat union Mahbub Hossain said that they had not received any complaints yet.

“There is no law to take action for what he did. But if a case is filed against him, then we can take necessary legal actions,'' said Abdul Alim.
