A group of local youths reportedly obstructed police in Barisal from performing their duty and snatched a suspect.
The incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Monday at the speedboat terminal in Barisal city.
Police said they, tipped off by locals, conducted a drive in a party held at a restaurant arranged by some youths and Speedboat Owners’ Association to arrest the suspect, one Shahidul.
As they handcuffed Shahidul, some 50 people allegedly encircled them and snatched the accused. They also tried to attack the police, witnesses said.
Later, senior officials and an additional team from Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP) reached the spot, baton-charge attackers and arrested Shahidul, said Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan, Deputy Commissioner of the Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP).
He said charges of obstruction of police duty will be brought against those involved in launching an attack on police.
