Police were seen deployed in the area around the clock to avoid any untoward incident

Update : 02 Oct 2021, 03:10 PM

A Hindu family in Bhola is living under a virtual house arrest ever since the head of the family, Gouranga Chandra Dey, was arrested over an alleged controversial Facebook post two weeks ago.

His family members claimed that they were instructed by the local administration to stay safe as various protests were being organized by Islamist groups against Gouranga for hurting religious sentiment.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Gouranga’s younger brother Ram Chandra Dey said: “I am terrified. None of us can even think of going out.”

Meanwhile, police were seen deployed in the area around the clock to avoid any untoward incident.

Police on September 16 arrested Gouranga in the face of protests against him for allegedly making slanderous remarks against Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) in Bhola.

However, Gouranga said his Facebook profile had been hacked and that he had filed a general complaint with the police on the night of September 18.

Bhola Superintendent of Police Sarkar Mohammad Kaiser said an investigation was underway. “In the meantime, Gouranga’s house has been put under police protection.”
