A suspected drug dealer was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred at around 8pm at the Koroibunia area under the Ratnapalong union of the upazila, confirmed Cox's Bazar BGB 34 Commanding Officer Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed.

The identity of the deceased could not be known as of yet.

Around 50,000 contraband yaba pills, a locally-made gun, two bullet cartridges were recovered from the scene, said the BGB officer.

He said: “Acting on a tip-off, a BGB team took position at the Koroibunia border to bust a consignment of yaba pills entering Bangladesh from Myanmar."

“Upon spotting a group of suspected smugglers, the BGB team challenged them which led to the gang to open fire. In response, the BGB personnel also retaliated in self-defence, triggering the gunfight.”

“Later, when the suspected smugglers retreated back inside Myanmar border, BGB men rescued the bullet-injured victim from the spot and rushed him to Upazila Health Complex. There, he was declared dead by the on-duty doctors.”

The body was later sent to the morgue of Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, he added.
