Ship at Mongla port springs leak, flooding imported cars below deck

Importers claim a loss of around Tk50 crore for potential water damage to at least 87 vehicles

Update : 08 Sep 2021, 03:49 PM

A foreign ship anchored at the Mongla port sprang a leak, causing the deck below, on which it was transporting imported vehicles, to be flooded.

Subsequently, importers concerned claimed a loss of around Tk50 crore for potential water damage to at least 87 vehicles.

Meanwhile, local shipping agents say the leak has been plugged and the water siphoned out before the affected vehicles were moved to safety.

According to port sources, the ship “Malaysia Star” dropped anchor at Mongla port earlier this week.

Alamgir Kabir Rubel, a car importer from Khulna, said he had four vehicles in that ship. “Water does major harm to these Japanese electric cars and causes issues with the engine and gearbox.”

Md Wahiduzzaman, general manager of Ancient Steamship Company Ltd, said that 639 imported vehicles arrived on the “Malaysian Star”. “On Deck 1, there were 143 automobiles. 50 of them had minor water damage as a result of the leak, while 16 had a little more.”

However, all the vehicles were unloaded from the ship as of 1:30pm on Wednesdays and the ship will leave Mongla port on Thursday, he added.
